Benzyl benzoate is an organic compound with the molecular formula C₁₄H₁₂O₂. It appears as a colorless, oily liquid that is insoluble in water and slightly soluble in malonic acid, but readily dissolves in oils, ethanol, and ether. It exhibits a mild almond-like aroma with a pungent taste.This compound can be synthesized through a reaction between sodium benzoate and benzyl chloride.

    Main applications:

    1. Applications in Solvents, Fixatives, and Plasticizers

    Benzyl benzoate is widely used as:  

    - A solvent for musk and a fixative in perfumery.  

    - A substitute for camphor in celluloid (cellulose nitrate).  

    -A plasticizer, particularly for nitrocellulose when blended with resins—often combined with diethyl phthalate (DEP) or dibutyl phthalate (DBP).  

    -An ingredient in whooping cough medications, anti-asthma drugs, as well as an insect repellent and acaricide (mite killer).  

     

    1. Primary Use as a Fixative in Flavor & Fragrance  

    It serves as a key fixative in:  

    -Fruit-flavored food essences(strawberry, pineapple, cherry) and alcoholic beverage flavorings.  

    - Cosmetic/perfumery formulations, including jasmine, lily of the valley, ylang-ylang, gardenia, tuberose, and lilac.  

    - Generally Usage levels:  

      - Chewing gum: 280 mg/kg  

      - Candies: 39 mg/kg  

      - Baked goods: 33 mg/kg

      - Soft drinks: 45 mg/kg  

      - Frozen desserts: 12 mg/kg  

     

    1. Solvent and Plasticizer Functions  

    - A solvent for cellulose acetate and nitrate.  

    - A plasticizer for plastics.  

    - A fixative in fragrance compositions.  

     

    1. Role in Perfumery as a Blending Agent  

    - Extensively used in cosmetic fragrances as a filler, modifier, and harmonizing agent.  

    - Frequently employed as a diluent for high-viscosity synthetic fragrance materials to improve workability.
