Benzoic acid is an important organic compound widely utilized across multiple industries. Below are its key applications:

    1. Food Preservative
Benzoic acid and its sodium salt (e.g., sodium benzoate) are commonly used as food preservatives due to their ability to inhibit the growth of molds, yeasts, and certain bacteria, thereby extending shelf life. They are frequently added to beverages, soy sauce, jams, and preserved fruits, though their usage must comply with strict regulatory limits.

    2. Pharmaceutical Applications
In medicine, benzoic acid exhibits antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a key ingredient in topical antiseptics, such as ointments and solutions for fungal skin infections. Additionally, it serves as a crucial intermediate in drug synthesis, facilitating the production of pharmacologically active compounds.

    3. Industrial Chemical Intermediate
Benzoic acid is a vital chemical intermediate in the production of plasticizers (e.g., benzoate esters), fragrances, and dyes. It also functions as a solvent and reaction intermediate in the manufacturing of plastics, rubber, and coatings.

    4. Cosmetics and Personal Care Products
Benzoic acid and its derivatives are employed as preservatives and pH adjusters in cosmetics to enhance product stability and longevity. They are also used in toothpaste, latex products, and other personal care items for their antimicrobial effects.

    5. Agricultural and Environmental Uses
In agriculture, benzoic acid is utilized in synthesizing pesticides and herbicides. However, excessive discharge of benzoic acid may contribute to water and soil pollution, posing ecological risks.

    6. Other Applications
Benzoic acid also functions as a fragrance fixative, lubricant additive, and coating auxiliary. For instance, it improves the gloss and water resistance of alkyd resin paints.
